Wave That Flag Tea Baggers!
An American flag billowed in the breeze against a bright blue sky while patriotic music blared Saturday afternoon as about 30 people gathered along North Davis Highway in Pensacola for a tea party rally.

Coordinated by John Baker of the Pensacola Tea Party, the purpose of the demonstration was to protest against President Barack Obama’s request to the U.S.

Congress last week to raise the debt ceiling by $1.2 trillion.

Kucinich: End the Fed & Create Full Employment

On Tuesday, Dennis KUCINICH told the simple, unvarnished truth behind the debt ceiling charade. The debt crisis is a creation of the neocons who want to "drown government in a bathtub". (What they want to drown is medicare and social security, not corporate welfare or the military.)

Here's the text of Kucinich's speech:

Why are we in debt? We borrow trillions for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, trillions for tax cuts for the rich. We borrow billions from China and Japan.

We have plenty of money for war, Wall Street, and welfare for the wealthy; but when millions of honest Americans need jobs, need wage increases, need health care, need education, need retirement security, they're told no, we don't have the money.

How is it that the Fed can create trillions of dollars to give to the banks but the U.S. can't meet its needs without going into debt to banks? The financial system works for a few at the expense of the many.

The Founders did not intend for America to be run by big banks and Wall Street. The Constitution put the ability to create money in the hands of Congress. The Fed took away that power in 1913. We need to get that power back to invest in our economy, to create jobs, to put America back to work, to rebuild America without going into debt. We must reclaim our destiny by reclaiming control over the money system.

Wisconsin Revolt--About “taking our country back”

One thing that's important to remember about the budget battle in Wisconsin is that when the new governor took office just over a month ago, the state still had a surplus.

That's right. There was no deficit. This made Wisconsin something of a rarity at a time when, following 30 years of Republican policies designed to sabotage government budgets, most states are drowning in a sea of red ink.

The new governor, a Koch-backed Teabagger named Scott Walker, needed a deficit so he could have an excuse to attack unions. So he created one, with some fake-out tax cuts. There was one, highly touted, that supposedly cut taxes for small businesses making over a half a million a year in revenues. Another permitted tax deductions on contributions to health savings accounts, and brought Wisconsin in line with 46 other states that have such. So far so good.

The REAL nature of the tax cuts, according to the blog One Wisconsin Now, were as follows:

$25 million for an economic development fund for job creation that still has $73 million due to a lack of job creation. Walker is creating a $25 million hole which will not create or retain jobs. [Wisconsin Legislative Fiscal Bureau, 1/7/11]

$48 million for private health savings accounts, which primarily benefit the wealthy. A study from the federal Governmental Accountability Office showed the average adjusted gross income of HSA participants was $139,000 and nearly half of HSA participants reported withdrawing nothing from their HSA, evidence that it is serving as a tax shelter for wealthy participants. [Government Accountability Office, 4/1/08; Wisconsin Legislative Fiscal Bureau, 1/11/11]

$67 million for a tax shift plan, so ill-conceived that at-best the benefit provided to job creators would be less than a dollar a day per new job, and may be as little as 30 cents a day. [Associated Press, 1/28/01]

The average “job creation” tax cut, according to Politifact, amounted to one dollar a year for each small business affected. Yes, you read that correctly. One dollar a day per job. You can apparently hire a lot of people for a dollar a day in Wisconsin. The HSA deduction will benefit roughly 1.3% of Wisconsin's taxpayers. That's right: one point three percent. Three guesses which end of the socio-economic spectrum they might reside on.

But it did what Walker wanted: it created a deficit where there hadn't been one before, so he could scream about implementing austerity measures.

Only he didn't offer anything in the way of cuts in services, or anything designed to [gawd ferbid] bring in more revenue. Instead, he came up with a bill to abolish collective bargaining by state employees.

That won't save the state a dime for several years, if ever. It means that without a union, the state will privatize everything they can, and outsourcing services ALWAYS costs more, and usually results in lower-quality employees, ones less accountable to the state government. When was the last time you met a Republican representative who gave a Fuck about deficit spending unless it was to break unions, weaken Democrats, or screw the people?

But the new governor, a fascist disguised as a conservative, wants to break the unions. Fascists absolutely hate unions, and will do anything they can to destroy them. There is no room for power-sharing in that Mindset.

So he presented his bill, and not only did the state unions explode (including the police and fire-fighter unions, who had supported him under the mistaken assumption that he was a conservative), but so did workers around the country. Suddenly there were huge demonstrations at the state capitol, and protests around the country. Liberal bloggers, spotting a similarity, started referring to Walker as “Hosni Walker”.

In a reprise of a redistricting scam in Texas authored by professional political outlaw Tom DeLay, the Democratic representatives bolted the state in order to deny to scofflaw Republican majorities in the state lege the quorum needed to pass the bill. In Texas, America's first third-world state, the Dems eventually lost, with the result that the state has grotesquely gerrymandered districts that manage to keep the white minority of the state in control. Shades of Boetha! Hopefully the Dems in Wisconsin will fare better.

The right wing noise machine sprang into action, of course. Faux News was claiming – falsely – that union employees were the reason Wisconsin had a deficit. On Friday, they had a correspondent in a very strange situation: a large burly sort was standing three feet from him, chanting “Fox lies!” over and over. Completely unfazed, he tried to engage the shouter in conversation, and the shouter just kept screaming “Fox Lies!”. The anchor suggested that perhaps the shouter would like a state-run station like Hosni Mubarak's TV which didn't show the protests after a couple of days.

Can you say “plant,” boys and girls? I knew you could! Oddly enough, the commentator didn't try to engage any of the hundreds others who were chanting the same thing.

The anti-union propaganda geared up rapidly. Many blogs got stories about a friend or neighbor or relative who was a retired teachers and “embarrassed to admit how big her pension was.” Gee, thirty years of wet-nursing mewling brats whose highest ambition is to be ignorant right wing assholes like mommy and daddy? Gee, I can't see any reason there to give them a pension, can you? One of the Republicans at the state house reportedly said teachers didn't deserve any special treatment (“special treatment” apparently means already-earned retirement pensions) because they don't “produce anything.” As if Republican representatives do.

Another anti-union whine is that cops get to retire at age 50 with full pension. Having already been overpaid as union employees to begin with. Most communities can't wait to get a full complement of underpaid 55 year old cops who can't afford to retire, right? It's not like cops take any risks or make any sacrifices, right?

This is the average salary (less benefits) of a state teacher over the average wage for a state:

Alabama 120%, Arkansas 117%, Arizona 130%, California 122%. I know this because the Teabag morons have been promoting it all over the blogosphere.

It's ironic that billionaires are spending lots of money getting their cultivated idiots in the Teabagger movement to parrot that line. Someone making 120% of what an “average” worker gets for the thankless task of educating children is someone getting undue and unearned privilege, it seems. At least, the people who whine copiously about having to pay 15% cap gains on their billions will tell you this.

Maybe people should ask themselves why, if these union employees make 120% of what they do, maybe they should join a union? Wouldn't you like a 20% raise, and bring your purchasing power back up to what it was in 1992?

Another yowl getting currency among the tin-foil soldiers of the right is that “unions are unconstitutional” and that FDR disapproved of public employee unions. The first is utter nonsense, of course: unions, like corporations, are groups of people banded together to further a mutual economic interest and act as a single legal entity. If unions are unconstitutional, so are corporations. As for FDR, he feared public employee unions becoming politically active and partisan—in short, an end-run around the laws that demolished the Spoils System. History has shown his fears to be unjustified. If there is danger of politicization of the bureaucracy (along with the courts and the military) it is from the fascist right, who love to take their stooges and dress them up in judges' robes and military costumes.

I really have to wonder what outside observers make of these morons who come piling out of their single-wides to take up the cause of eliminating cap-gain taxes and paying for it by cutting teachers' pay, benefits, pensions, and overall numbers, all in the name of reducing worker power.

We've had 30 years of Reaganomics, and all we have to show for it is fewer good jobs, poorer pay, and howls from the entitled class that it's not fair that they should have to pay ANYTHING for the upkeep of the country and the people they have spent a generation gutting.

A favorite line of plutocrats and their pet teabaggers is that they want to “take our country back.” A lot of the Teabaggers are stupid enough that they think it means standard conservative halcyon days of the 1950s when cars had fins, households only needed one wage earner on one job, Negroes knew their place, and teen pregnancy could be swept under the carpet, with illegitimate offspring dumped at orphanages for the priests to play with.

The fascists mean something else entirely. They aren't yearning for long ago days, unless perhaps it was the 1920s, or even the 1870s, when plutocrats nearly did take over the country entire. And when they talk about “taking our country back”, they really mean “taking the country,” period.

And they want to take it from us. That's why they want to break the power of the middle class, steal the pensions, and make Americans weak, subservient, and totally dependent on their employers for everything.

It's time this “taking” ended.

As news stories are leading those still aware of the war on Iraq to believe it's over, it was encouraging to see Busboys and Poets restaurant in Washington, D.C., packed Sunday evening for a four-hour forum on actions needed to actually end that war, make reparations, and deter future wars of aggression. we hear is that the leak has been stopped......... no answer

as to why this could not have been done 100 days ago.

AND "we" (whoever that is) are monitoring the effects of

millions of gallons in the Gulf. "Monitoring"?? How is

I received an email from Pres. Obama asking me to stand with him on a clean
energy bill. This is my response to his email:

Dear Barack,

I have been giving you a chance to implement those "changes" for well over a year now
and all I see is more bullschitt & cutesy speeches which, quite frankly, make me want to vomit. You have bent over backwards, sideways & every which way to appease and please the Republicans. And what did that gain for you?

Did you not notice idiots like Eric Cantor, John Boner, John McCain, Michelle Bachman,Mitch McConnell, and others like them calling you everything but the 'N' word and I would guess that everyone of them called you that & more behind your back more times than we could count.

Yeah, I know you are returning to this area today as I had to dodge the people workingin this awful heat putting up barricades to keep "We the People" away from you.

I've been writing letters for clean energy for a bunch of years now only to be ignored by you while you were in the Senate and which will probably be ignored by you now that you are in the White House. So why the hell should I waste my time signing your damn petition?

You dragged that so called health care bill out for over a year and then you were too damn cowardly to include a public option. You had to go behind closed doors and make dirty deals with the companies that are bankrupting this country & making health care unaffordable for the very people who need it the most.

So you will have to pardon me Obama, if I just don't put a lot of stake in anything you say these days. If you ever grow any balls and decide to stand up to the vile, corrupt Republican party I will support you to my last breath but not until.

By the way, I have heard that the "clean energy" bill that the Senate has dreamed up is a pile of horse manure at best......... that it's just another hand out to the people causing the problems. Get real Obama. As our first Black President you have the means to gain massive public support for almost anything you want to accomplish but you have to show that you are representing "We the People" and not the damn, corrupt, greedy, corporations.

Why don't you put on your boots today and make a stop in Orange Beach, Alabama which is a hop, skip and jump from Pensacola and which is becoming covered up with that that nasty, foul smelling, crap that BP is pumping out into the gulf?

AND why doesn't BP have more tankers in the location of the actual spill siphoning up that crap. Seems to me that a few tankers dropping pipes down and catching that stuff as it explodes upwards would prevent tons of it from ever being a problem. Do I Look Like The Bank of America?

BAH! Humbug! Do I look like the fffing Bank of America?

For at least two months my mailbox has been flooded daily by requests for donations. The past couple weeks the incoming beg emails have doubled, tripled or more.

If I don't donate it seems the world will come crashing down around us. Sometimes I get up to a dozen emails a day from the same organization.

Everybody just has to have money to keep their web sites and blogs going. True a few ask only for $5. but others are a little more brazen and tell me that I can donate up to $2000 or whatever the legal limit! They make it look as though I should donate that $2000., however they will accept a lesser mount..........Scrooge!

I have 10 grandchildren and I happen to think they are a more worthy cause. They are getting my meager dollars! I am not buying a pile of cheap, poisonous Chinese made crap either. I am sticking with books (For the older ones) , building blocks (for the little ones), handcrafted Teddy Bears and quilts.

The books I buy will not be written by Granny Palin, Chicken George Bush, or any other political hack.

So....STFU with your begging emails. I don't have anything to donate and if I did you irritable bastards would be the last in line!

I received your beg letter this morning asking for a donation of $25 or "whatever you can afford so we can finish this fight". I can't afford shit Pres. Barrack thanks to the gawd awful economy and the fact that my only income is $850. a month SS check. I paid $525. of that for rent. You're getting what I can afford........NOTHING! ZERO! NOT ONE FUCKING RED CENT! ZILCH! NADA!

As for that damn health care bill that you are gloating and calling history making. Give me a fucking break. It's history making alright. It's giving more money than ever before to the corrupt, greedy insurance industry.

Celebrate my ass! NOT REST? Are you really this dumb? We busted our asses calling, emailing, faxing you and that sorryass congress. Most of this country wants single payer ("Medicare for all")......something that will put a stop to the corruption and graft produced by those damn insurance companies. What did you do? You continue with, "...insider lobbyists and partisan operatives really thought that the old formula of scare tactics, D.C. back-scratching and special-interest money would still be enough to block any idea they didn't like." Well, Hell's Bells. Go look at that pile of crap passed by that pansyassed Congress. THEY WON! They did block anything that was worthwhile in the 1000+ pages of bullshit.

Do you really think that the American people are so fucking dumb that they can't see what's in front of their very eyes? Have you lost your freaking mind Pres. Barrack? What the hell is the matter with you?

Your "Affordable Health Care for America Act" is a pile of bullshit for the uninsured and a truckload of benefits for the greedy, whore-monger insurance companies and next to nothing for We the People.

You're damn tooting that we made it crystal clear that the old rules need to be changed. So far it's also crystal clear that you have done nothing to change those rules, that you are doing your utmost to ignore them or use them for your own power trip.

Get Rid of the anti-trust exemption for insurance industries

I am beyond frustrated with this whole process. When I step back and really think about it, I have to ask myself what value do insurance companies add? In theory it spreads the cost of health care over a larger population, thus the healthy are subsidizing the sick, and the net result is that the cost to the entire population, on average, is low. That’s the theory. What has been happening is the opposite. The healthy are subsidizing the sick, but they are also subsidizing the greedy investors who are making huge profits and driving up the cost of insurance.

The insurance industry with their bogus study this week announced that their first priority was to profits, and screw the sick AND the healthy. Single payer is the only avenue that has the potential to take the profit motive out of the PAYMENT system. Remember health insurance is not health CARE, it is only a system processing payments for clients who are getting health care. That is like making millions of dollars just for clearing a check. Even in this day and age, my bank can clear that check for pennies—or fractions of pennies.

For some reason I never realized that the insurance industry had an anti-trust exemption. I think it is time that a bunch of state attorneys general started looking at anti-trust laws and challenge the constitutionality of giving an anti-trust exemption to a payment system that actually has the beneficiary of the payment betting against themselves—when we make a premium payment, we are betting that we will get our money back, but the only way to do so is to get sick. It is a huge casino with the cards stacked against everyone but the shareholder. Why does that shareholder in a casino deserve more consideration than the health of an entire nation? .... I really appreciate seeing this description about this bill. There are so many of them, all different, and the result is confusion regarding what's good, and what's not.

I really wish that someone like Consumer Reports would do a serious analysis of all of these bills, and point out which are better and which are awful. Of course, the reason CU doesn't tackle this, I suspect, is because with their publication cycle, and there being so many bills and all of them are moving targets, the analysis and their report would be out of date and thus no longer valid before it even hitsubscribers' mailboxes.

And indeed, this is one of the most serious problems in our entire present system of government...! All of these bills change and mutate before they get passed, such that the passed version often only vaguely resembles (if even that) the originally offered bill, with nobody really understanding what it does and what it doesn't do.

The solution is very simple, is already in place and is sitting before their very eyes. Thom Hartmann wrote this letter (Link below) a couple weeks ago and I have sent and resent it. This week I plan to fax it to every member of Congress........one at a time! Hartmann calls for Medicare for those who do not have insurance. Republicans & most of the Democrats don't want this to happen, screeching, "How will we pay for it?" Hogwash... I have medicare & a supplement. On my limited income (a SS check) I pay just under $200.00 a month. There is no reason on earth why Medicare health insurance premiums could not be deducted from a paycheck, based on salary just like income taxes, etc. This congress is making a mountian out of a molehill for the sole purpose of benefiting the Insurance industry and their own pockets. The bill is already written and needs only a couple lines to expand it.

Dear President Obama,

I understand you’re thinking of dumping your “public option” because of all the demagoguery by Sarah Palin and Dick Armey and Newt Gingrich and their crowd on right-wing radio and Fox. Fine. Good idea, in fact.

Instead, let’s make it simple. Please let us buy into Medicare.

It would be so easy. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel with this so-called “public option” that’s a whole new program from the ground up. Medicare already exists. It works. Some people will like it, others won’t – just like the Post Office versus FedEx analogy you’re so comfortable with.

Just pass a simple bill – it could probably be just a few lines, like when Medicare was expanded to include disabled people – that says that any American citizen can buy into the program at a rate to be set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) which reflects the actual cost for us to buy into it.

So it’s revenue neutral!

To make it available to people of low income, raise the rates slightly for all currently non-eligible people (like me – under 65) to cover the cost of below-200%-of-poverty people. Revenue neutral again.

Most of us will do damn near anything to get out from under the thumbs of the multi-millionaire CEOs who are running our current insurance programs. Sign me up!

This lets you blow up all the rumors about death panels and grandma and everything else: everybody knows what Medicare is. Those who scorn it can go with Blue Cross. Those who like it can buy into it. Simplicity itself.

Of course, we’d like a few fixes, like letting Medicare negotiate drug prices and filling some of the holes Republicans and AARP and the big insurance lobbyists have drilled into Medicare so people have to buy “supplemental” insurance, but that can wait for the second round. Let’s get this done first.

Simple stuff. Medicare for anybody who wants it. Private health insurance for those who don’t. Easy message. Even Max Baucus and Chuck Grassley can understand it. Sarah Palin can buy into it, or ignore it. No death panels, no granny plugs, nothing. Just a few sentences.

Replace the “you must be disabled or 65″ with “here’s what it’ll cost if you want to buy in, and here’s the sliding scale of subsidies we’ll give you if you’re poor, paid for by everybody else who’s buying in.” (You could roll back the Reagan tax cuts and make it all free, but that’s another rant.)

We elected you because we expected you to have the courage of your convictions. Here’s how. Not the “single payer Medicare for all” that many of us would prefer, but a simple, “Medicare for anybody who wants to buy in.”

I'm sick to death of the damn fool excuses for why we can't have health care for everyone. I'm sick of the idiots who have fffffed up our public school system. I'm royally pissed that most of our jobs have disappeared. I'm damned sick of listening to excuses and bullschitt reasons for all the corruption.

Stop the goddamn wars, close most of the 800 military bases we have scattered around the world, cut the damn military budget in half and we can afford just about anything we want. AND we would still have the best military in the world.

Impeach/prosecute the SOBs. Rescind the damn corporate favouring rules that the corrupt congress has passed.......regulate the bastards.

Most of all pass a law that makes for public funding of elections with no contributions/bribes to put an end to the corporate ownership of our congress. Actually passage of a law like this might get rid of half that rotten Congress.

Perhaps you’ve seen those television commercials denouncing health care reform as a plot to create a Canadian-style totalitarian nightmare, and you feel a wee bit scared. Back in the election campaign, some people spread rumors that Barack Obama might be a secret Muslim conspiring to impose Sharia law on us. That seems unlikely now, but what if he’s a covert Canadian plotting to impose ... health care? Rick Scott, a former hospital company chief executive, leads a group called Conservatives for Patients’ Rights http://www.cprights.org/ . He was forced to resign as C.E.O. after his company defrauded the government through overbilling and is now spending his time trying to block meaningful health care reform by terrifying us with commercials of“real-life stories of the victims of government-run health care.”

So here’s a far more representative “real-life story.”

Diane Tucker, 59, is an American lawyer who moved to Vancouver, Canada, in 2006. Like everyone else there, she now pays the equivalent of just $49 a month for health care.

Then one day two years ago, Ms. Tucker was working on her office computer when she noticed that she was having trouble typing with her right hand.“I realized my hand was numb, so I tried to stand up to shake it out,”she remembered. “But I had trouble standing.”

A colleague called 911, and an ambulance rushed her to the nearest hospital.“An emergency room doctor met me at the door, and they took me straight upstairs to the CT scan,” she recalled. A neurologist explained that she had suffered a stroke.

Ms. Tucker spent a week at the hospital. “The doctors were great, although there were also a couple of jerks,” she said. “The nursing staff was wonderful.” Still, there were two patients to a room, and conditions weren’t as opulent as at some American hospitals. “The food was horrible,” she said. Then again, the price was right. “They never spoke to me about money,”she said. “Not when I checked in, and not when I left.”

Scaremongers emphasize the waits for specialists in Canada, and there’s some truth to the stories. After the stroke, Ms. Tucker needed to make aroutine appointment with a neurologist and an ophthalmologist to see if she should drive again.

Initially, those appointments would have meant a two- or three-month wait, although in the end she managed to arrange them more quickly. Ms. Tucker underwent three months of rehabilitation, including physical therapy several times a week. Again there was no charge, no co-payment.

Then, last year, Ms. Tucker fainted while on a visit to San Francisco,and an ambulance rushed her to the nearest hospital. But this was in the United States, so the person meeting her at the emergency room door wasn’t a doctor.“The first person I saw was a lady with a computer,” she said, “asking me how I intended to pay the bill.” Ms. Tucker did, in fact, have insurance, but she was told she would have to pay herself and seek reimbursement. Nothing was seriously wrong, and the hospital discharged her after five hours. The bill came to $8,789.29. Ms. Tucker has since lost her job in the recession, but she says she’s stuck in Canada — because if she goes back to the United States, she will pay a fortune for private health insurance because of her history of a stroke. “I’m trying to find another job here,” she said. “I want to stay here because of medical insurance.”Another advantage of the Canadian system, she says, is that it emphasizes preventive care. When a friend was diagnosed as being pre-diabetic, he was put in a free two-year program emphasizing an improved diet and lifestyle — and he emerged as no longer being prone to diabetes.

If Ms. Tucker’s story surprises you, you should know that Mr. Scott’s public relations initiative against health reform is led by the same firm that orchestrated the “Swift boat campaign” against Senator John Kerry in 2004. These commercials are just as false, for President Obama is not proposing government-run health care — just a public insurance element in the mix.No doubt there are some genuine horror stories in Canada, as there are here in the United States.

Don't you know that Doctors and other medical professionals have joined with the great majority of American citizens in calling for the "Medicare for everyone" plan? Do you even care? Was that just another self-serving, "oh God help me get elected" lie?

Nuts Go Nuts Over Obama and National Day of Prayer

In the early 1950s, when lawmakers were adding "under God" to the Pledge and changing all American money to include the phrase "In God We Trust," Congress created an official annual Prayer Day for the nation. Congress, under pressure from the religious right, changed the law in 1988 to set the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May. Obama, like his predecessors, issued a proclamation (pdf) honoring the "holiday."

So, what's the problem? Unlike George W. Bush, Obama didn't open up the White House to the self-appointed National Day of Prayer Task Force, run by religious right activists, which has hosted exclusive events for the last eight years.

This has led a variety of conservatives to make a variety of demonstrably false claims:
Lie #1: Rush Limbaugh said Obama tried to "cancel" the National Day of Prayer.
That's obviously not true; Obama issued a proclamation acknowledging the day. No effort was made to "cancel" anything.

Lie #2: Fox News' online project, Fox Nation, said the president "won't celebrate" the National Day of Prayer.

Again, the proclamation proves otherwise.

Lie #3: Fox News' Gretchen Carlson said the president's decision to participate in "private" prayer on "National Prayer Day" is evidence of Obama "giving in to the PC society that we live in."

No one pressured Obama to keep the National Day of Prayer Task Force out of the White House; it was just the obvious thing to do. As for the knock on "private" prayer, I might recommend Gretchen Carlson read Matthew 6:6.

Lie #4: Fox News' Steve Doocy said Reagan and George H. W. Bush held events similar to that of George W. Bush.

As hard as this is to believe, Doocy has it backwards. Reagan largely ignored the NDP for his first seven years in office.

Lie #5: Elisabeth Hasselbeck said on Fox News that the National Day of Prayer "has been a huge tradition" in the U.S.

That's just nonsense, since most presidents, like most Americans, have largely ignored the "holiday." Besides, Obama is keeping the "tradition" going by doing what his predecessors have done -- he issued a proclamation.

Hasselbeck -- who is she again? -- concluded, "We should be able to gather and pray as we see fit." What I'll never understand about conservative activists is why they think they need government to get involved in spiritual matters. Hasselbeck could get together with others to pray as they see fit yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Whether the Dobsons get to hang out in the East Room of the White House is irrelevant.

Honestly, I'm not sure which is more annoying -- the conservatives' prayer-related dishonesty or their prayer-related whining.

It is way past time that something be done about the fraudulent case against Don Siegelman and dozens more like it.

Don Siegelman was probably the only honest governor that Alabama has had in a number of decades! He is the victim of the vile, filthy, underhanded Karl Rove and a couple of corrupt U.S. Attorneys who still squat in the office they should have vacated in January.

Alice Martin & Leura Canary are the U.S. Attorneys who are a guilty as sin in this case. They have worked with Karl Rove (probably Bush & Cheney as well) to get Don out of the picture. As you should know, Don was re-elected as governor of Alabama & was "unelected" overnight due to election fraud that took place in Baldwin county, Alabama.

These thieves were not satisfied that they stole the election from Don so they then set out to prosecute under false charges. There is no doubt in my mind that Canary & Martin filmed the way Siegelman was treated for their own sick enjoyment later. This entire case has been too disgusting for words.

Don was prosecuted for being an honest Democrat. The proof is in front of anyone who wants to look. I could rant for several hours about this obscene case but I know that would be wasted time. Mr. Siegelman's case is in full public view on the internet.

Please take the time to look at this case, get it thrown out and clear Don Siegelman's name. Then PLEASE advise President Obama to get rid of the rest of Bush's U.S. Attorneys. I understand that over 50 of them are still laying claim to the office where they were appointed by Bush and his gang of thugs. I also understand that all across this country there have been over 700 political prosecutions under George Bush's U.S. Attorneys.

If you do not know who Paul Minor is, see here. Or read through my PRM series, links are at end. In short, he is another Don Siegelman. Both men allege that they were politically prosecuted and the evidence thus far supports their version of events. Karl Rove may be playing games with the House Judiciary Committee and wasting time for all involved, but the people who were most affected by abuses of the DOJ do not have the time for these games.
I have been in contact with Mr. Minor's family and friends over the course of the last 48 hours. Here is what is going on. As most of you who have followed this know, Mr. Minor's wife Sylvia is dying of cancer and is in hospice. He has been denied appeal bond because he is "a danger to society." Remember, he was convicted of bribing 2 judges, so unless he is going to bribe the public to death, this argument is idiotic.
But, the judge who ruled on the bond issue is a long time friend and former client of Karl Rove's, and it was due to his pressure to get her seated (despite a bipartisan opposition) that Judge Priscilla Owen got on the bench.
The only hope for Mr. Minor after this ruling was to get a furlough from the BOP. He was notified in the last few days that it was time for him to come say his goodbyes to Mrs. Minor, his wife of 40 years. The end is near. The BOP, the warden, all involved signed off to give him a 3 day furlough to see his wife and be with her.
In the last 48 hours, the DOJ stepped in and said no. But after some negotiations, he was given 3 hours tomorrow to see his wife in the company of 3-4 armed escorts who will be in the hospice room with him during this private and difficult moment.
And yet all are silent. The mainstream press is entirely silent on Paul Minor's case. The bloggers on the left and right are entirely silent about this as well. Why? Why does no one care about the number of people who have been politically targeted by the DOJ and prosecuted for political reasons, in some cases on cooked evidence? Perhaps because it has not happened to you. But should it ever, I wonder who will speak for you and ask for justice on your behalf.

Remember that totally untrue story spread by Rove-ites at the time of the 2001 inauguration that all the "W" keys were missing from the keyboards in the White House, supposedly to illustrate the pettiness and spite of the outgoing Democratic administration? Well, George W. Bush can't let some popular president show him up in sheer malice, so he has told the Obamas that they cannot move into the Blair House, traditionally the home of the President-elect before the inauguration:
President Bush’s aides have turned down a request from President-elect Barack Obama to move from Chicago into Blair House, the official guest residence across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, in time for Mr. Obama’s daughters to start school in Washington on Jan. 5.
The Obamas were told that they could move into Blair House on Jan. 15, but no earlier, because it is booked, an Obama transition official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “We explored the idea so that the girls could start school on schedule,” the official said. “But there were previously scheduled events and guests that couldn’t be displaced.”
White House officials declined to disclose specifically who is using Blair House during that period, for what purpose or how they could take precedence over the president-elect of the United States when it came to government housing; one White House official would say only that it had been booked for “receptions and gatherings” by members of the departing Bush administration. Those receptions, the official said, “don’t make it suitable for full-time occupancy by the Obamas yet.”

They are incapable of lying. The Rightwing has backed itself into a corner. It has assembled a psychological structure based on the family, with an infallible (and unquestioned) Father/Leader paradigm. It can not begin to question its own basis for existence. Questioning is disloyal. You have seen many examples where they equate dissent with treason and sedition. They place an inordinate value on symbols. They are infatuated with public displays of fidelity and allegiance. They are focused on pledges of allegiance, flag and banner worship and adherence to mythical, unchallenged god-like "Founding Fathers". They insist on literal translations of the Bible (even though "Thou Shall Not Kill" can be interpreted as "Kill at will if it pleases you"). They are not capable of lying because they are not capable of accepting facts that do not comport with their cult like belief system.

They are incapable of lying because they do not posses the ability to absorb a fact that contradicts their belief system. It is like a organism that cannot ingest food being unable to regurgitate. Since they can't admit facts, they can't not bear false witness against facts. They can only shape the incoming data by peeling off the unacceptable, and then reshaping the result into something that is palatable. This behavior is the only way they can maintain their closed system of belief. Remember who you are dealing with: these are men and women of the 21st century that deny the existence of evolution. They claim a direct line to God, an unimpeachable ability to interpret Biblical texts (of varying translations) while simultaneously maintaining that the words are true verbatim, without need of interpretation. They insist that the Constitution is an immutable, unchanging document even though it has undergone two dozen ammendments and has a built in mechanism spelled out for changing it. Think about that. They can actually tell you the Constitution is not changeable while ARGUING THE MERITS OF AN AMMENDMENT (which is an English word for "change").

Rightwingers insist, beyond any rational statistical logic that we are a "right of center" country. How preposterous can you get? As if they can determine a center of a political spectrum that has no finite end points and then decide that most people are to the right of that mythical center of line with no known ends.

So you really just frustrate yourself when you try to hold them to a standard of truth. Truth is rooted in exploration of all of reality and the very basis of Conservative thought is to exclude reality. Remember, this is a group that actively campaigns against intellectualism. The Conservative movement is trapped. Like a bank robber in a the midst of a plan gone awry they are holed up in a cell of their own making with no way out. They don't believe in evolution. They have named themselves "conservative" which means to avoid change. They have lost 80% of the American public. They have embraced a backward looking view. They have cut off debate amongst themselves and they have dissolved into a party that spends its entire time focusing on who can pillory their fellow believers for not being faithful enough.

They cannot lie, but they can lay in the bed of their own making. They can wallow. And wallow they will in their suffocating mud of self affirming irrelevance.

From 1999 to 2003 Don Siegelman was the popular Democratic Governor of Alabama... until what a bipartisan array of politicians including Wesley Clarke and Republican Former US Attorney General Richard Thornburgh have criticized as a politically motivated effort, tied to Karl Rove and also connected to former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, that convicted Siegelman of dubious felony charges and sent him to federal prison. A bipartisan group of 52 former states attorneys general have filed a legal brief on Siegelman's behalf, in the appeals case to come before the 11th Circuit Court this December 9th.

Republicans have abused the power of the Presidential pardon since Gerald Ford used it to preemptively pardon the criminal Richard Nixon. It was argued that Americans, with their delicate sensitivities, weren’t mature enough to cope with the idea that an elected official might face a fair and public trial for crimes he may have committed or had committed while in office.

If the JFK assassination undermined American innocence (and Gerald Ford tried to spin fairy tales about that, too), then the Nixon pardon undermined American confidence in themselves as a place where justice could be served.

Lightning struck again some 18 years later, when George Bush used the power of the pardon to kick apart the case being pursued against the criminal Ronald Reagan, and in which some scummy little felons and traitors such as Oliver North and G. Gordon Liddy got to run free and sneer loudly at the country that gave them their undeserved liberty.

Losing in Vietnam didn’t do nearly as much damage to American self-respect as the sight of G. Gordon Liddy braying into his radio microphone that people should shoot federal agents in the head as a way of demonstrating their Liddy-style patriotism.

A lot of people watched this, and watched right wingers openly gloating over it, and wondered what the fuck had gone wrong with America.

And then, for the next eight years, the same vicious and amoral clowns who guffawed over the sight of Nixon lazing in the California sun and tried to make a tin hero out of the moronic Reagan, tried to destroy the Clinton presidency by impeaching him over trivia.

Now, we have a crowd that makes the Nixon scummies and the Reagan sleazers look like pikers. For the past eight years, we’ve seen the most criminal and anti-American administration in history. They haven’t settled for third rate burglaries and selling arms to terrorists, no. They stole an election to get in, and then proceeded to spend years looting the national treasury, lied the country into a war whose real aim was to abet in that looting, let terrorists attack the country, refused a serious investigation into it, and used it to pass measures that slashed the rights of Americans while politicizing the judicial branch of the government, and attempted to establish one-party rule, supported by a corrupted judiciary and a crooked voting system.

And while they were at it, they committed war crimes, and gave America the same reputation the old Soviet Union used to have, of torture and unjust imprisonments without trial and secret prison camps.

They robbed the country blind, and humiliated and debased it in the process. They didn’t govern America; they didn’t even rule it. They simply raped it.

And now, mercifully, the reign of these vicious, anti-American little Republican scumbags is coming to an end.

But will any of them ever pay for their crimes? Trillions of dollars have gone missing from the common weal, either sunk into wars for profit, siphoned off to the undeserving rich, or evaporated in the implosion of a capitalist bubble that was given all the internal air pressure it wanted. Three thousand people died in 9/11, and another 5,000 Americans have died in Afghanistan and Iraq. We’ll probably never know how many died in Iraq just for living there, or how many were herded off to American gulags to die of torture, or spend years wondering if they would ever get a trial, let alone ever be set free. Elections were suborned, and Clinton was hardly the only public servant to be attacked by the Republican slime-and-destroy machine, now in the paws of the nation’s district attorneys. At least one governor was framed and sent to jail. In today’s paper, there was a story of a indictment of Dick Cheney and Alberto Gonzales in which the judge, another corrupt, bent Republican stooge, actually tried to dismiss the charges before they were legally filed.

What the fuck is wrong with America, you ask? It got taken over by corrupt, amoral Republican crooks, and nobody has the balls to make them pay for their crimes. And now, they are just clinging on, hoping that the entire country won’t collapse before the mess is foisted off on President-elect Obama, and trying like hell to blame him for the situation they created.

And while they are doing that, they are waiting for Putsch’s preemptive pardons, the ones that ensure that they will never have to face their responsibility for the millions of lives lost and the trillions of dollars squandered or stolen. They’ll never have to stand in open court and explain why they insisted Saddam had nukes when he didn’t, or why NORAD was ordered to stand down on the morning of 9/11, or why Governor Siegleman was sent to jail, or why Putsch suddenly fired all those Federal attorneys and replaced them with ones willing to investigate Democratic candidates for office.

The Republicans, who laughingly describe themselves as the party of personal responsibility, desperately need those presidential pardons issued preemptively so they can skate, never pay a dime, and crow that if they were criminals, why weren’t they ever put on trial?

If that doesn’t sicken you, then you are morally bankrupt or worse, a Republican.

That’s why it is so important that impeachment proceedings be started now in the Democratic House of Representatives against George W. Bush. He won’t actually be impeached in the 58 days remaining before he leaves office, making an impeachment moot. There isn’t time.

But the Constitution, the one which grants Presidents the power to pardon, has one exception: A president may pardon, “except in cases of impeachment.” As I read it, it means that not only may a president not pardon any high public officials who are facing impeachment, but it means that a president who is facing the impeachment process may not use it in any way that could undermine the process against himself.

Putsch will abuse it and use it to take himself and his cronies off the hook. Don’t doubt that for an instant.

And don’t doubt that it will be another emotional and moral body blow to Americans, who had just regained a little self-respect and a lot of hope from electing Obama and throwing off the Republican reign of sleaze.

It isn’t just a matter of vindictiveness against Putsch, although personally I would be delighted if he spent the rest of his natural life rotting away in a jail cell. It’s because America, which has always prided itself on justice, and avenging wrongs, has faced terrible injustice and wrongs for the past eight years, and needs the opportunity to address it through rule of law, in open court, and by the standards of the civilized world.

Don’t let Putsch get away with his crimes. Impeach the little bastard now, and make him eventually face a jury to explain himself.

The Obamas visit the Great Chicken and His Mother Hen

All day long yesterday I listened to the anorexic talking heads blab, blab, blab, about what was happening inside the White House as President elect Obama was meeting with the outgoing, fraudulently imposed upon us, George Bush, more commonly known as the village idiot.

Bush handing over power to Obama with grace screamed the Yahoo headline. I beg to differ with the writer of that headline. Bush is trying to make as many unsavory changes as he can before he departs. That's not graceful!

But that's a whole 'nother story. Regarding this meeting, one has to wonder why the talking heads yammered about this for hours upon hours. Did they expect Obama to walk into the Oval Office, pick Bush up by his shirt collar and start beating some sense into him? Or did they expect Bush to throw one of his temper tantrums & hold a long "news conference" telling us what an asshole Obama is? Honestly, it seemed as though they were disappointed not to see any fists flying!

"What are they talking about" whispered one anorexic little bimbo from CNN with the world's knobbiest knees. Did we think they are angry at each other. Are they arguing about what's to happen in the next two months?

This went on for most of the day, with only brief interruptions to show the Barack & Michelle Obama arriving at the White House. After that and for the next hour or two the bimbos guessed, estimated and analyzed. The brought in their teams of "experts" to guess about "what's going on in the White House".

Wouldn't it have been nice if they had paid that much attention to the vile activity of the squatter in the Oval Office these past 8 yrs?

When all was said and done Obama & Michelle exited the White House looking very much like they did when they arrived, no black eyes, no torn clothing....

Bush accompanied them to and fro acting more presidential than he had the entire 8 yrs. of his miserable reign.

And why shouldn't he? He was posing for a most impressive photo-op with the first Black president in the history of this nation..... Anything for that legacy.

Around midnight, when the election outcome was clear, thousands of young people walked and skipped and ran to the north gates of the White House, celebrating not just the election of Barack Obama but the repudiation of George W. Bush.

Amid a cacophony of car horns honking and chants of “Yes We Can” and “O-ba-ma,” there were taunts directed at the current occupant of the White House, chants of “No More Bush” and “Nah-nah, Good-bye.”

For all the historic significance of Obama’s victory – the first African-American elected U.S. President and the nation finally choosing hope over fear – there was another part of the story: a public repudiation of George W. Bush and what he stands for.

One of my early memories of that vile little man's administration was his appearance at graduation at one of the military academies. A young black man who was graduating, ran up to get his diploma, grabbed Bush & hugged him as he danced up and down with excitement at getting his diploma. Bush was in shock and as the young man let go, he stepped back and started wiping the sleeves of his jacket off as if to brush something away that had been left by the young man. That action spoke loudly about the elitist George Bush & what was in store for us.

Eskimo Boy, Scott Palin as "First Lady"???

I was watching a news clip this morning and there was Scott Palin, shaking hands & waving at the crowd as though he was running for president. Oh my, he was putting on quite a show and for a while there was no sign of Granny Palin. Eventually, of course the camera swings around to catch Granny.

As I watched a visual of Eskimo boy as first lady (First Dude?) floated across my mind.......... yee gods, I was wide awake but it was a nightmare in the making.

First "lady"...... and I think of Nancy Reagan ordering brand new china, redecorating the White House to suit her taste at our expense, of course. Next I see "First Lady Palin" followed by the sight of a bear skin rug on the floor of the Oval office, deer antlers & assorted preserved animal heads on the walls & a platter of mooseburgers sitting on the desktop that had once held the writings of Abe Lincoln.

The day before pResident Palin, accompanied by daughters Bristol, Piper & grandson Trig, had ordered her helicopter and flew over the National Zoo where she shot the moose. She swings out of the helicopter & down she goes to grab the dying moose by his antlers, yanks his head back and slashes his throat. She proceeds to gut and skin the poor animal, then orders the White House cook to load him up for the trip back to the kitchen where it was cut up, ground up and cooked for Granny Palin.

Now the mooseburgers sit on the desk on a platter that is part of the new set of China, which is decorated with a picture of a large male moose. Granny is leaning back in the chair ....ooops the chair. No longer that presidential looking leather chair, we are now faced with a large sofa covered in skins from the multiple animals killed by Granny Palin.

It is a virtual patchwork of little animal skins. Across the room is an extral long table/desk, placed there just for "First Lady" Scott. It features a coordinated Lazy Boy recliner also covered with the fur from little dead animals. On the desk is a red phone that matches the one on pResident Granny Palin's desk. The table also has a life size sculpture of a sled and sled dogs.

"First Lady" Scott is sitting erect in his Lazy Boy, with a comb in hand, carefully combing every hair in place as he smiles at himself in the mirror which is mounted on the side of the sled. He primps, poses & smiles some more as he carefully trims the dainty beard on his face.

He leans over to brush a tiny speck of dust off the snowmobile sitting next to his desk. Just then the red phone rings and he jumps to grab it at the same time as Granny Palin picks up the one on her desk.........

..........Dog sled races on the White House lawn, Mooseburgers, snowmobiles careening throw the streets of DC, helicopters zooming around with Granny Palin taking aim from above.................................. Dick Cheney cheering in his hidden bunker....... Tom Delay yelling, "PNAC is back"..........

And George Bush watching on his monster screen TV in Paraguay as the money pours into his bank account...............smirking.......... McCain is turning in his grave knowing it's all his fault........all of it!

Yee gods! I turn back to the boob tube which is telling me about the world's worst boxer, who is giving up fighting as a career because he has lost 256 of 300 bouts!

Relief! Scott Palin is not "First Lady" but, a word of warning, don't count your chickens before the eggs hatch. Granny Palin has announced that she's not finished with us yet.

The dumbing down of America continues, as does the long nightmare.

Small wonder that George Monbiot asked in a recent Alternet article, " How did politics in the United States come to be dominated by people who make a virtue out of ignorance? Was it charity that has permitted mankind's closest living relative to spend two terms as president?"

No one can really quite believe it.

It is the thing That Can Barely Be Named, the Great Unspoken, the impossible truth that feels too good to be true and hence few dare actually mention it aloud lest it somehow vanish and time reverses itself and the devil snorts and chuckles and reveals his grand, horrible joke, and suddenly it's 2001 all over again. Please, no screaming.

Can you sense it? Do you feel the deep tingle? Because amid the fiscal meltdown and Obama's stunning poll numbers and the stress of the election, this staggering fact: George W. Bush is nearly done. He will soon be gone forever, America's most spectacularly incompetent footnote, the oily residue left on the pavement after his administration's giant Hummer of ineptitude is finally hauled to the crusher.

It is, to put it mildly, a bizarre feeling. Surreal. Disorienting. After all, the nightmare has lasted so long. This wound has been raw and open for years.
No matter. It is easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. It is easy to overlook the grand prize, the greatest gift this decade has yet to offer. Yes, it's Obama, but also the flipside: an America without Bush anywhere near the steering wheel. Hallelujah indeed.

So then, I have made a quick inventory, a short preparatory checklist of things you can do, right now, to get ready for the magnificent shift, the massive exhale of thanksitude. Because no matter how bleak and tense it all seems right now, just remember: He can never be president again. God, my fingertips quiver just writing that.

1) Make new travel plans. Yes, the dollar has been gutted. Yes, a small espresso and a day-old sourdough baguette on the rue du Cherche-Midi will cost you 97 dollars. But if you can afford it, now is the time to plan a new European jaunt.

Why? Easy: No more foreigners scowling at you. No more shameful hiding of your nationality. No more telling that hot barista you're from Canada and instead confessing, with even a tiny hint of Obama-infused national pride, "I'm American," and then not apologizing and feeling that sickly sense of mortification. Incredible.

2) Whip out your 2009 Precious Moments wall calendar, start blocking out weekends for all the spring weddings now being planned by your most lovestruck gay friends. Pitiable evangelical panic aside, Proposition 8 shows hopeful signs of being slammed to the ground like the hateful piece of homophobic intolerance it so very much is (then again, as of this writing, this one's still too close to call). At least Connecticut just joined the gay marriage party. What will you wear? Who tosses the bouquet?

3) Remember books? Actual literature? Stock up. Read more 3 Quarks Daily and N+1 and Arts & Letters Daily, subscribe to the New York Review of Books, TLS, The Atlantic, The Sun. Prepare, in other words, for a new climate of intellectual stimulation and curiosity. Prime your mind. It's been a while since someone in the White House had an IQ higher than a pickup's tailpipe. The quality of the national dialogue is about to improve tremendously.

4) Remember Lawrence v. Texas? The landmark 2003 Supreme Court case that overturned the Lone Star State's hateful little law that made consensual sodomy a criminal offense? That single decision has proved to be quietly revolutionary, knocking down similar insidious laws across the nation and transforming the government's role in legislating sexual morality in your own bedroom. You want to celebrate Bush's permanent retirement to Crawford? Enjoy the perfect send-off with a well-lubricated loved one? You know what to do.
5) Get ready to pray. To Shiva, to Shakti, to Astarte and Allah and Buddha and Jesus and the Great Mother and whatever divine energy you like that the Dems don't completely botch it, get just as power-drunk and monomaniacal as their GOP counterparts, and squander what's shaping up to be an astonishing opportunity to reshape the American experiment.

Fact: the neocons and the evangelicals had a stranglehold on the U.S. government for six solid years, and they very nearly destroyed the country. The good news is, there is nowhere for the Dems to go but up. They can't possibly do worse. The bad news is, even with a brilliant, steady, unflappable President Obama at the helm, they could sure as hell try.
6) God is dead. Or rather, the Repub's particularly cruel version, a gloomy, tyrannical, guilt-slingin' God from Colorado Springs who loved war and smacked up women's rights and pretended to tolerate gay people even while hating "what they do," a God who snorted the Republican agenda like it was cheap meth in a Denver motel room, has proven to be a complete failure, an abomination of divine connection. Translation: God is not what they say, and She never was.
I have no suggestion here. Please feel free to invent your own.

7) Plant a garden. Sow a seed. Map out a plan. Prepare a new project, business, yoga practice, love interest, a great thwopping orgasm of why-the-hell-not. See, the energy is changing. The sorcerer's curse is lifting, the wicked witch is dead, the land is barren no more. Anything that needs to grow can now begin to flourish. Anything positive and conscious that gets planted now stands a far better chance of prospering. It's simple cosmic physics.
What, don't believe in that like-attracts-like, up-your-vibration, collective-consciousness hippie crap? How sad for you. And your fellow Republicans.

8) Gratitude. Cultivate it. Celebrate it. You survived. Check that: You survived, barely. To be sure, the accident was awful. The crash was bloody and hellish, far worse than anyone expected. Tens of thousands dead. Hotbeds of terrorism now even hotter. Fewer jobs, more homelessness, more fear, prisons overflowing, banks failing.
So then. Is it not time to feel thankful? That you're still here? That we made it all the way to rock bottom, and we're still breathing? How about that you're still reading these words, right now, and I'm still here to write them, and we still have this connection, this tenuous lifeline of thought and discourse and humor, even as the imps of dread and conservative numbness tried for years to block it, derail it, shut it all down?

9) See them there, receding, sliding back into the Void with a wail and a whimper. Prepare, at long last, to wave goodbye.

The campaign against him is not one that anybody will point to with pride in years to come. It is a long trail of honking and flapping and traces of green slime, as if a flock of geese had taken up residence in the front yard.

But Barack's cool poise in the face of blather is some sort of testament to American heart and humor. The man has walked tall and his wife has turned out to be the brightest figure in the whole political parade, an ebullient woman of quick wit and beautiful spirit. Bravo, Michelle.

Onward, America. We've all seen plenty of the worst -- the sly cruelty, the arrogant ignorance, the fascination with trivia, the cheats, the weaselish and piggish and the buzzardly -- but we can rise above it if we will only recognize a leader when one comes along and have the sense to let him lead.

It was not a debate. Just as television in prime time has been largely emptied of drama and innovative comedy, with a few exceptions, in favor of empty-headed "reality shows," so the political debates have mostly been gutted.

Judging "how the candidates did" is rather like weighing in on the wittiness of the libretto of "Big Brother" or the pace of character development in the latest episode of "Keeping up with the Kardashians." The genre of the political review assumes that both candidates are credible in their roles. It becomes self-parody when one candidate is a ditzy nonentity cynically foisted on the public in the same way a 'reality show' is, based on a targeted demographic and without regard to quality.

It reminded me of the excruciating first episodes every season of "American Idol," when a single candidate is found who has the voice of an angel and then everyone else auditioned sounds like fingernails on a blackboard.

The news organizations and civic groups that sponsor political debates have allowed the campaigns to push them around so vigorously that nothing like a debate is any longer possible. The Bushies even tried to force the networks to hide the fact that John Kerry was taller than his rival in 2004. It is not about debating but about how your candidate looks on television.

Not only was there no debate but Sarah Palin was not required actually to answer any of the questions put to her, and she announced before she began that she was just going to throw up on us all the talking points that she had binged on in Arizona for the past few days.

She mugged for the camera, winked like a bar fly, and just went on talking and talking and talking, oblivious to whatever anyone else said. Not only did she ignore most of Gwen Ifill's questions, she paid no attention to what Joe Biden said. When he choked up over the loss of his family, she did not have the decency to express any kind of condolences. It is almost as though she is autistic and unable to connect with human beings.

Not only was it not a debate and not only did Palin answer virtually none of the questions put to her, but the whole idea of such an event was ridiculous.

Joe Biden has been either the chairman or the ranking minority member on the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee for many years, and is one of our foremost foreign affairs experts and legislators. His acumen and expertise are wide-ranging.

Palin has revealed her real self in the Gibson and Couric interviews, and clearly knows nothing and offers only rubbery expressions and glib repetition, for all the world like a rasping myna bird, of a stream of memorized talking points that sound as though thy were disinterred from a time capsule originally buried in William F. Buckley Jr.'s back yard several decades ago.

It was not a debate, and pretending that it was and judging "performance" is to fall into the trap set by the campaign spinmeisters and talking point pimps.

If they ever did the results of DNA testing on a typical American small town, and released the results showing who was related to whom at noon one day, you would probably hear the first gun shots by 12:15, the opening rounds in a 300 year civil war with twenty sides.
It isn’t just American small towns, of course. They just tend to be deeper in Puritanical denial in the red states, is all.

But you have a relatively small number of people who don’t get to consort much with anyone other than the people they attended elementary school with, and marriages sometimes compete with friendships, or other love affairs, and of course, there’s always boozy nights at the local flat-roofed bar with the pickups in the parking lot, and the result is a lot of babies whose birth certificates have more fiction – and are sometimes more lurid – than a Stephen King novel.

I’m not judging these folks – they’re only human, after all. But I would be a whole lot more sympathetic if they didn’t spend the time when they aren’t fucking their cousin’s brains out lecturing us on how intellectuals, the media elite and big city folks don’t have any family values..................

There is one more element, and there’s nothing funny about this one at all. I’ve heard various people describe Wasilla, Palin’s home town, as a “meth town.” ....

Wasilla, semi-remote and with a played-out economic engine, sounds like a prime candidate.
Crystal meth has had an absolutely horrible effect on small-town America. The shit is easy to make, dirt cheap, addictive as hell, and incredibly nasty. It can take a high school prom queen and turn her into a toothless crone in five years.

The Republican economic miracle hasn’t helped. With no safety net or training, all a played-out small town has left is grudging charity, a circling of the wagons and subsequent siege mentality, and that gawd-awful stifling pseudo-Christian morality that sneers at anyone who isn’t well off or well adjusted.

So the next time red staters want to lecture on morality, and prattle on about Clinton or Edwards or whoever, they stand on notice: we know better. We know what they are. And we aren’t impressed with the moral chest thumping.

Since being chosen as John's McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin has caused a hurricane in the media and blogosphere, where one rumor has it that her 4-month old son, Trig, born with Down syndrome, isn't hers, but belongs to her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol. The theory goes that Palin covered up her daughter's pregnancy for political reasons.

Yes, it's hard to believe (I surely don't). But at age 44, Gov. Palin would certainly be the right person to fly cover for her daughter..........................

Rumormongers could latch onto the fact that teens from the ages of 15 to 19 have given birth to Down syndrome babies at a higher rate than mothers in their early 20s. But it is not a substantial rate. No, what troubles me about Palin's fifth pregnancy is that she was given a choice whether to have Trig, a choice that, as a staunchly pro-life politician, she would deny other women.

Gov. Palin apparently took a special blood test to detect that she was carrying a baby with Down syndrome. When he was born, she released a statement: "Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives."
By knowingly giving birth to a Down syndrome child, Palin represents a minority of women. A 2002 study found that about 90 percent of pregnancies in the United States where the fetus was diagnosed with Down syndrome were terminated.

We could ask, given that Palin had no doubts about seeing her pregnancy through, why she bothered to take a genetic test. Why not, as you might expect a woman in her position and with her outspoken beliefs to do, decline any testing or counseling? Of course, it seems very reasonable to want to know about the health of your baby and to have time to prepare (emotionally and otherwise) for a baby that may have a genetic disorder. But that doesn't negate the fact that by having a blood test, Palin was given a choice about what to do.

Palin was given a choice whether to have that child, something, if she had her way as a lawmaker, she wouldn't give others. According to legal experts, should Roe v. Wade be overturned, some states could outlaw abortion for Down syndrome or other birth defects, and women wouldn't have Palin's choice.

So while I respect Palin's decision to raise Trig, that's all the respect she will get from me. I don't see eye-to-eye with her on anything else: energy, guns, sex education and of course a woman's right to choose. Her supporters say that Trig signals that she practices what she preaches. But her to decision to have him is also a sign of her hypocrisy.

Ordinarily, I would dismiss this kind of allegation as utter horseshit and cruel, but given her relative obscurity and the completely baffling selection of her as a VP candidate, I followed the links about this earlier and then went down a bottomless Google rabbit hole. I sat on it for a while and although it still seems far-fetched, goddamn if there aren’t some really, really weird things about this.
Let’s review some very basic facts:
Daughter Bristol was reportedly pulled out of school for 4-7 months prior to the delivery for “prolonged case of mono.” Which was completely unreported in the local media. I know Alaska is nuts, but try to imagine any governor’s kid being absent from school for that length of time without any mention in the press, or by her parents. Notably, her absence from school has not been substantiated by school documents, as far as I know, so this may not be fact.
Family picture at the holidays (2007). The expectant mother would be just about four months pregnant, if the May 18th due date claimed by Palin was accurate. Interesting arm position of daughter Bristol. The son isn’t there, as he joined the military about the same time someone in the family discovered they were pregnant.

Just for contrast and shits and giggles, here is notoriously tiny Nicole Ritchie at six months of pregnancy.
Announced pregnancy in March, 2008, when she was “about seven months pregnant.” Most women don’t announce until viability and given the risks of this ‘pregnancy,’ perhaps that is prudent. Except she is a very much a pro-lifer and, given the risks of her ‘pregnancy’ and her role as governor, some contingency plans would be needed if things went sideways, medically. Not to mention the fact that a high risk pregnancy requires a lot more medical visits in the early stages, and her scheduler would have to accommodate those. Yet “[e]ven close members of her staff said they only learned this week their boss was expecting.” No one could believe it. Read the article.
Before giving a speech in Texas on April 17, 2008, while she was eight months’ pregnant, she starts having contractions and leaking amniotic fluid. Again, 44 years old, high risk pregnancy, confirmed Down’s syndrome, now seeing signs of possible premature birth. She does not summon a doctor or attempt to be examined by an OB-GYN in a city with five star, advanced medical facilities that are well-equipped to handle a potential high-risk birth. She says she telephoned her family practice doctor in her small Alaskan town (who is not an OB-GYN, but rather a family practice doctor specializing in child abuse who, in 2002, received a national award, recommended by the then-mayor, Sara Palin). Who apparently gives her the go-ahead to give a speech and fly home when she’s done.
So she freaking gives the speech and then GETS ON A PLANE? Having contractions every hour? Doesn’t tell the airline or staff? Onflight staff do not notice any signs of labor or pregnancy? Women with uneventful pregnancies don’t travel cross-country in their last months, let alone WHEN THEY ARE IN LABOR and leaking amniotic fluid in a high risk pregnancy.
Gets off plane nine hours later - which, by the way, had a layover in Seattle (another city with five star medical facilities), in Anchorage (yet more five star facilities), They landed in Anchorage around 10:30 p.m. Thursday and an hour later were at the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. Baldwin-Johnson said she had to induce labor, and the baby didn’t come until 6:30 a.m. Friday.
Except Baldwin-Johnson works at a completely different hospital in Palin’s hometown of Wasilla and is not listed as a physician (or an OB-GYN, because she isn’t one) at Mat-Su. Again, so we’re clear, Palin went to a different hospital than the one at which the doctor (who advised her she was safe to travel) works, and one that isn’t in her hometown of Wasilla.
Somewhere, someone allegedly induces labor. If the leaking amniotic fluid wasn’t a concern enough to address for 18+ hours, let alone preclude approval for flight travel (the air pressure aggravates the dangers of infection and further irritation of the leak), and she wasn’t actually in labor when she arrived, why induce a premature birth of a baby with Down’s?
I say somewhere because there is no record of the birth at Mat-Su. Even though widely reported press accounts suggest she gave birth there.
Baby is born six hours later, the next morning. Six pounds, two ounces. Pretty normal birthweight for any baby, let alone one born a month premature, given the fact that in your last month of pregnancy, your baby is gaining half a pound a week. Just so we are clear, had the baby been born ‘full term’ (according to the governor’s claimed due date of May 18), he would have had an estimated birth weight of about 8.2 pounds, which is above average. So the “oh, the baby had Down’s and was underweight and that’s why she wasn’t showing at six months,” explanation is bullshit. There was nothing abnormal about the birth weight of this child.
Three days later, announces (at work) that the baby has Down’s syndrome, that she has known that since early in the pregnancy. Why would a staunchly pro-life woman, who opposes legal abortions for rape and incest victims, screen for birth defects when there is ABSOLUTELY no chance that she would have an abortion?
Gave birth to a premature baby with Down’s and was at work three days later. Oh, and she says she is nursing him. In her spare time, and apparently, that of others. She is now stumping for McCain.
And while we are on that, before all of this speculation arose, Bristol was featured prominently on Megan McCain’s blog, holding Trig in nearly every picture. Today (8-31-08), however, there is nary a mention of her on Megan’s blog, only a few shots of her in the background, holding Trig, and she (and baby Trig) were conspicuously absent from the family shots onstage.
The only thing that suggests Sarah Palin is the mother of Trig is the Down’s syndrome, as it is strongly associated with older mothers. But what I really suspect is this: you would have to be an asshole to go down this rabbit hole and suggest what I (and others) am suggesting. Which is that this grandmother is lying about her ‘baby with Down’s.’ Such speculation will fuel the far right’s fervor against the far left. She is eminently likable in sound bytes and moderately accomplished, and attacking her and her family will fuel the right wing base and the perceived ‘women’s vote.’ If she is lying, it is for a noble cause, and if she isn’t, well, those filthy lefties are just ruthless Obama fanatics who would dare question such a personal matter.
Myself, I didn’t think I had a dog in this hunt, except I kind of do. She is campaigning on a pro-life platform and citing this as evidence of her commitment to “every life matters” (can’t wait to learn of her stance on the death penalty). I don’t doubt her commitment to her beliefs and I highly respect her devotion to Trig, whatever form that took. What is nagging at me is the possibility that her choices were imposed on her daughter, and, if what I am suggesting is true, that she is wickedly deceitful and calculating. And I have had more than enough of that.

There’s part of me, the real cynic in me, that deep down wonders if this isn’t all some elaborate scheme cooked up by Karl Rove. You know, pluck a nice, sweet, somewhat competent mom-politician, but one with glaring flaws, and add her to the ticket knowing full well that the Democrats and the press are going to launch into a feeding frenzy over her numerous issues. Then, after she has to be removed from the ticket in disgrace, the Republicans can play the “Obama hates women” card to try to pull in more sympathy votes from Hillary’s death-cult of angry vaginal stooges.

Damnation, guess what I just remembered.... Bristol Palin in a car accident on February 8th. What do you bet that produced early labor & delivery?

Baby is born premature & with Down Syndrome. Health problems made it look like he might not survive so they watch and wait. At about one month it looks as though he will make it so they decide how to handle this embarrassing little bundle of joy.

SO......Grandma Sarah announced on March 6 that she was about 7 months pregnant. If she gave birth on April 18 that would add up to 8.5 months which would not be considered premature, especially since he weighed 6 lbs 2 oz. and because this was baby number 5, (if she is to be believed) ....so a couple weeks early would not be considered an early delivery.

So why say anything about the baby being premature. Maybe because the baby really was premature when he was born in February! Perhaps a slip of the tongue. Pehaps because she did not have her math correct on the original announcement..... who knows? But somewhere along there the word premature slipped in and she's now stuck with it.

Now we've seen enough pictures taken of the good Gov from the time of her announcement up to the birth to know that she was lying through her teeth. She was not pregnant.

But never fear. We're talking about a Republican here. Lie and lie some more is their motto for life. They've decided on a story and all they have to do is decide on a date that little Trig Paxon Van Palin will make his official entry into the Republican world of make believe and lies.

All they have to do is decide on a date that fits into Granny's schedule but not too far down the road that he would make people ask questions because he might not look like a newborn.

So they checked out the schedule for the good gov. Aha..... that Texas speaking event. That might do the trick. So off they go, making notes and putting the final touches on the "delivery" story for cute little Trig.

The water breaking even before she gave her speech is a bit much to believe. I'm sure that even the good Gov wishes she had not thrown in that bit. It would have made much more sense to say that half way home she started feeling twinges that felt like labor pains starting. Did she go to the closest hospital. Oh hell no.... she had to drive some more to get to that puny little town where Trig was hidden out.

Never-the-less some things have slipped out so now the game is to play it to the hilt as republicans usually do. Embellish those lies & smile baby, smile.

Note that another possible lie popped into the story on April 21 in a story at http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/382560.html when Gov. Palin said
that she was never in full blown labor on the plane but was having a contraction or two every hour. Have you ever heard of a woman who had given birth to 4 previous kids having a contraction or two every hour for the 8 flight plus more driving to get to the hospital of choice??

The flight itself would have probably thrown her into full blown hard labor and a fast delivery! Anyway, no big deal since the old girl is not pregnant anyway. So home they go..........

Grandma Sarah announces birth April 18.... Three days later she is back at work.

Everything is all hunky-dory until people start questioning the flat tummy.

Now after two days of questions and no answers Granny suddenly announces that 17 Year old Bristol is pregnant ...5 months which happens to be exactly how old little Trig is supposed to be so it's not possible that Bristol could be his mom.

The hell you say! That baby was born in February. When Granny announced that the baby was hers, the last thing they expected was that little Bristol was pregnant again.

OH SCHITT!

Now what the hell can they do? So they did nothing until this weekend when people started noticing that things didn't add up.

What better story than to announce that cute little Bristol is pregnant to put an end to that rumor. After all she can have a miscarrage in a month or so. OR maybe she really is pregnant with number two.

Don't let anyone kid you & tell you that she could not become pregnant within two months of delivering the baby. I happen to have two granddaughters who are exactly 11 months apart.

Former President Bill Clinton has pledged to cheering Democratic National Convention delegates to strongly support Barack Obama's campaign for the White House saying Obama "has a remarkable ability to inspire people."

Amazing how little time is given to a great speech by our last legally elected president, Bill Clinton. I watched TV for two hours this morning before I saw the first clip. Now this little less than 3 minute video is presented for the purpose of showing the endorsement only.

Why are the republicans, the media, etc., still so jealous of President Bill Clinton?

I suspect it is because he makes people look at what was & what should be. The majority of people in this country don't give a damn about his affair or the lie he told about it. What we all know is that he was a good, well-respected, well-loved president who did good for the country and he did it in spite of all the crap thrown at him by the hate mongering republicans. His respect throughout the world still exceeds anything and everything that Chicken George has ever done. To cover up for what a miserable failure and what a disgusting excuse for a human being that Bush is, the Grand Old Pricks will lie through their teeth and all the way to their death bed for that miserable excuse for a man.

We have had pRes Dick and his little puppet for the past 7 & 1/2 long years & they have tried to destroy this country from the inside out. Never has there been more corrupt administration in the history of this country.

I suspect that if we look back through history we might see that they could take the record for the most corrupt, the most destructive, the most greedy, & self-serving administration in the history of the world.

To any Democrat or other sane person: If you vote for McCain and he wins, you may very well have a hand in the final destruction of this country. McCain is as despicable as George Bush or Dick Cheney. He is just another arrogant playboy swinging through life on his daddy's coat tails & his Stepford Wife's money, trying to make people believe that he is a war hero. Based on what I hear about that he may very well have done that by selling out fellow soldiers and betraying this country.

I like Hillary Clinton and I think she would be a much better president than you but when she dropped her campaign and asked us to support you, I did so. Now I am beginning to wonder if I should just throw in the towel.
